The Youth Worker's Mind

Mon, 8 Nov 2010

How does one explain what goes on in the head of a youth pastor?...one might say ask their spouse; others may say ask their students and yet another may say you watch the progression of their wardrobe changes...their iPod playlist selections...or the creativity of their facial hair (guys only, hopefully!)

Just a bit deeper than that is the question of how does a youth worker decide how to plan their organizations' approach and schedule for mission trips and service projects to others...?

Here are a few simple questions that must be asked in preparation for such an adventure...

  1. The Purpose: Why are we pursuing this mission adventure? Is it for 'our' sake or 'their' sake? The people you will be serving will most definitely have something to gain from your efforts. However, as the youth leader, it is your privilege to be providing your students/families with the opportunity to not only be stretched out side of their comfort zones but to be exposed to a unique way of the God's voice to call to them...(there is soooo much more on this topic...just soak on it)
  2. The Location: You've heard it said..."Location is Everything!" This is so true in providing a worthwhile experience in serving others. Matching your groups abilities & talents to the right ministry partner is critical. So critical that it requires a good foundation and relationship so that planning is as 'air tight' as possible.
  3. The Tangibles: dates, cost, transportation, lodging, meals, programming, volunteer staff, communication, resources, training, fundraising, pre-site trip...(ok...I have to take a breath; whew!)
  4. The Intensity: The Youth Worker MUST approach the mission adventure with a sense of urgency and intentionality. If they do not; then success of the efforts made will be minimal. You cannot just vies this as another calendar event to check of your annual programming list. This is an opportunity to deeply impact the culture of your ministry! If you as the leader aren't able to pour your heart and passions into this kind of service; then aggressively pray that God will bring someone along side of you who can help your passion grow and communicate with you the amazing adventure that awaits your group!

Are you overwhelmed?...don't be. Are you excited?...that's great. Do you need some help?...Okay; that's where an organization like City Connexx comes in...let us help grow your passions and serve you as God prepares you to serve your world!

Anticipating...
