Meridian, MS Overview

Meridian, Mississippi, in Lauderdale county, is located 86 miles E of Jackson, Mississippi (center to center) and is 185 miles NE of New Orleans, Louisiana. The city has a population of approximately 39,968.

Meridian, MS History

The city of Meridian was so named by the early settlers, who by mistake thought the city name meant "junction". The city was originally inhabited by the Choctaw Native Americans. After the Treaty of Dancing Rabbit Creek was signed, the European- Americans started moving in to this area. Meridian was incorporated in the year 1860. The first settler of the area was Richard McLemore who offered offering free land to people in order to develop the city.
