Kansas City, MO Overview

Kansas City lies along both banks of the Kansas River in rolling, hilly country on the border between Kansas and Missouri. This midwestern industrial city is also an agricultural center of the plains region of the United States. Officially nicknamed the “City of Fountains,” Kansas City claims to have second most in the world, just behind Rome. A closer look at this metropolitan community, however, reveals a significant number of inner-city residents living below poverty level. Crime is on the rise statewide, with the fourth worst violent crime rate among cities with more than 100,000 people. Many of the city's murders and violent crimes occur in the city's inner core. Gang activity is a major reason why the violent crime rate has consistently driven the city and metropolitan area away from livability. As long as poverty levels continue to linger where they are currently, crime in the urban core of the city will remain at the same level intensity. This will continually hinder initiatives to revitalize the community, that the residents of Kansas City so desperately need.
