Gallup Overview

Gallup, New Mexico, in McKinley county, is 116 miles W of Rio Rancho and 122 miles W of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The city has a population of 20,209. Gallup was founded in 1891. It was established as the Pacific and Atlantic Railroad’s railhead. The city was named “Gallup” in honor of David Gallup, a paymaster for the Pacific and Atlantic Railroad. The area is often known as the “Indian Capital of the World.” 36.6% of the population is Native American, 40% white.
