Denver, CO Overview

As the gateway to the Rocky Mountains, the city of Denver, Colorado sits one mile above sea level. The "Mile-High City" is one of the nation’s most highly educated cities, and prides itself on being clean and active. If you look closely, you will find the same struggles and problems that affect any other urban area. Denver is struggling with issues like gentrification and homelessness. There are over 4,600 homeless individuals in the city of Denver, 43 percent of who are women and children. Children represent a growing percentage of homeless people in the area—many living in motels, shelters or other temporary housing. Another significant issue facing the Denver community is the staggering number of teen runaways. Many of these teens are living on the streets, and almost half struggle with some form of substance abuse.

Today, Denver’s population is 554,636. Thirty-two percent of residents are of Hispanic and Latino descent and 11 percent are African American. Denver’s diversity is celebrated at numerous festivals, including the nation’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration. There are plenty of recreational opportunities in the area, with more than 200 parks in the city and 20,000 acres of parks in the nearby mountains.
