CityConnexx built on the CCDA model

Mon, 17 Oct 2011

Often folks ask me how we come up with our model for doing urban and Native American mission trips.
Well, for me it began in Seminary when I started reading books by Dr. John Perkins. He was active in the civil rights movement in Mississippi. Dr. Perkins' personal testimony is amazing. I don't have time to summarize it here but you can google it. During decades of ministering to the "least of these" and without a lot of major donors and foundations to fund his dreams, Dr. Perkins pioneered what is now known as Christian Community Development and founded CCDA.
I've been a disciple of Dr. Perkins since 1984. So when the Lord called my wife and I to start an urban ministry in Indy, I followed his principles which are pretty simple and follow the methods of Jesus Christ in building his church:
1. Compassion - Giving a Fish
2. Church - Teaching people to Fish
3. Community Development - Owning the Pond
Dr. Perkins learned in the segregated south during those difficult early civil rights years that the church must embrace the physical and spiritual "felt needs" of at risk communities and become incarnate instruments of God's love, power, and compassion through the example of his son, Jesus Christ. We want to do the same through CityConnexx mission trips.
So, when Dr. Perkins and CCDA co-founder "Coach" Wayne Gordon had a vision to share the CCDA model and message across the country, we were one of the first to host "America's Cities Campaign" in 1987. Those were humble beginnings with about 200 folks showing up for seminars, workshops and of course hearing Dr. Perkins passion in that old inner city church. This was the spark that helped generate the annual CCDA national conference which was held this past week in Indy, where I learned urban ministry on the streets and from the people. It was good last week to return to those roots, share with over 3,000 other CCDA members and soak in what God is doing in so many marvelous and wonderful ways around the country.
CityConnexx is here to help connect the body of Christ, which is still the most separated group in America, 40 years after Dr. Martin Luther King shared his famous line about Sunday morning. We have a desperate desire to see your church, your group get out of it's comfortable four walls and see what amazing things that God is doing in the urban and Native American churches. It will open your eyes and increase your vision for what God can do in your own backyard.
So what are you waiting for. Push the "Register" button at the top of this page and step out on faith. Get uncomfortable for Christ. Break those cultural and class barriers. Reach out to your brothers and sisters in Christ who serve in the trenches, who give unselfishly of themselves 24/7. Find out what God is up to and jump in, the water's fine!
