Chicago is one of the most ethnically diverse areas, boasting over 200
ethnic and language groups, but at the same time is also one of the most
segregated. Chicago’s residential areas are broken out into hundreds of
distinct neighborhoods, and racial tensions are high. Chicago is home
to the largest housing project in the world. AIDS, prostitution, gang
violence, and drug abuse are prevalent in the community. All this takes
place behind the scenes, while the upper-economic areas of the city grow
and thrive.

is continually on the rise and the homeless population reached roughly
165,000 people. Of the homeless population, 46.5% were families, which
is a reoccuring trend in urban, inner-cities due to the economic
climate. 56% of women in Chicago homeless shelters are survivors of
domestic violence.
